I’m not well-versed in fantasy novels, but I am so curious about the possible subgenre of fantasy that eschews the conventions of Tolkien — something that isn’t vaguely in the middle ages with dragons and wizards and stuff. Who has been able to successfully do this? I guess Dune counts?, but when something is set in the future it’s suddenly “sci-fi”, not “fantasy.”
Are there any fantasy novels that take place in present day, but aren’t still just like Tolkien characters hanging at the mall?
