I think this might be the first Clint Eastwood movie I’ve ever seen, believe it or not. I didn’t know that…he’s a bad actor? Is this a known thing? John Malkovich acts circles around him.
We were told by the program director for this theater’s 70mm festival that there were probably a total of six 70mm prints of this movie struck, and that this one in particular has been sitting unplayed in a corner at Sony somewhere.
The theater called Sony to ask if they had a 70mm print of the film; Sony said no; they asked them to double-check; and they found it. As a result it was in near-perfect condition.
The movie is fine. The writing is a little labored, the plot didn’t make a ton of sense, and there are clearly some hamfisted attempts at feeding one-liners to Eastwood and at showing off some “morphing” CGI technology that was huge at the time. (Seriously, I cannot overstate how obsessed the world was with “morphing” in the early 90s.) But as a relic of the 90s it was fun.
Somewhat unbelievably, the last line of the film is “I know things about pigeons.”
