The first and only time I saw this was in the theater as a nine-year-old. It was PG, but because I can’t imagine my parents thinking I’d like it, I wonder if they were unable to get a sitter or something.

According to an article in the AP, studios worried it would be too complicated for audiences to understand.

I forgot (or never knew) that it featured Tim Curry! Always a welcome surprise. Weirdly I almost watched Congo the other day, too.

Some typography notes: The “establishing titles” (or whatever you call those — the superimposed text that tells you where and when something is happening, often animated in with the sound of a typewriter) are in the ever-predictable Eurostile, but the subtitles, curiously, are in ITC Newtext.
